Subedar Sanjay Kumar is a Junior Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army and received the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military award, for his courage and dedication to the country on the front lines during the Kargil War in 1999 . He was part of the 13th JAK RIF Battalion.
Sanjay Kumar was born on Wednesday 3 March 1976 (45 years old; as of 2021) at Kalol Bakain, Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh. His zodiac sign is Pisces. After completing his 10th standard, Sanjay Kumar had to drop out of school and find a job to take care of his family’s financial expenses. Sanjay Kumar was determined to join the Indian Army as a rifleman of the 13th JAK RIF regiment as his uncle was also a member of the regiment and he gave his life for the country during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. When Sanjay reportedly first tried to get himself into the Indian Army, he was rejected by division recruiters, after which he moved to Delhi to learn to drive and then returned to his hometown of Bilaspur, where he became a taxi driver. Later, he tried again and was rejected again; however, on his third attempt, he was finally selected to join the Indian Army in 1996. Sanjay Kumar joined the 13th Jammu and Kashmir Rifle Battalion on July 4, 1999, where he served as a rifleman.

During the Kargil War of 1999, Infantry Sanjay Kumar volunteered as the leader of a scout tasked with attacking and occupying the flat top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley on July 4, 1999. When his squad went to capture point 4875, Pakistani soldiers started shooting with automatic rifles and machine guns to stop the squad from reaching their (Pakistani army’s) bunker. Realizing the importance of the mission and the gravity of the situation, Sanjay Kumar rushed to the Pakistani soldiers’ bunker. He managed to kill three soldiers in a duel and was seriously wounded. Despite being wounded, he rushed to the second bunker and attacked the soldiers who were hiding there. Pakistani soldiers left behind their UMG (Universal Machine Gun), which Sanjay used to kill fleeing enemies. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar fought valiantly with complete disregard for his safety and was awarded India’s highest military award – Param Vir Chakra for showing courage and dedication to his country.
In 2010, Subedar Sanjay Kumar was demoted from Havildar to Lance Naik. The Indian Army declined to answer any questions about his de-escalation, but the army continued to refer to him as Javier Da in its press release. Later, the issue was highly reported by the media. In 2014, Sanjay Kumar was promoted to Naib Subedar and became a Junior Officer Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army.

On the show, Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar was invited to interact with Arnab Goswami and (retired) Major Gaurav Arya and spoke about his experiences during the Kargil War.
