3 players to prove this weekend, including the talented Spurs

The Premier League returns this weekend and three players from Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham will prove their point.

After a brief FA Cup buffer, attention has refocused on the league and a few big games to come.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Perhaps the most dramatic draw was Liverpool’s away game against Leicester City (12.30pm on Saturday).

Jurgen Klopp will realise that a positive result against the Foxes would completely weaken their title defence.

The Reds have stuttered and stumbled lately and looked like a shadow of the team that recently conquered Europe.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s slump reflects their decline. The talented Liverpool defender is rightly regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world after his performances last year.

He’s arguably no longer the best right-back in England, let alone globally.

Alexander-Arnold’s defensive prowess has been questioned, but they are often forgiven because of his offensive prowess.

Now, even though that’s gone from his repertoire, it makes the defensive problem even worse.

With just one assist and four goals in 2020/21 compared to his four and 15 in 2019/20, it’s a marked deterioration.

The Kingship Tour has provided Alexander-Arnold with the perfect platform to shake off his recent mistakes and prove he remains the most talented full-back in the country.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Another man who has fallen from the peak of past seasons is Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Arsenal host Leeds United on Sunday (16.30pm) in another interesting battle between the two teams for the same goal.

Twelve months ago, it was impossible to imagine the Gunners’ starting line-up without Aubameyang, but it is now a harsh reality for the striker.

Mikel Arteta has not started Arsenal’s captaincy in his first four league games, opting instead for his young Gunners and re-ignited Nicolas Pepe.

Aubameyang has dropped 21 goals from his 2019/20 campaign, but there is not much evidence he will recover.

Leeds United’s open back line should provide him with an ideal path to reopen his scoring account.

Dele Ali

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur (5.30pm on Saturday) capped off a fantastic game. Guardiola vs Mourinho. Dele Ali and his demons.

Sometimes it feels like Alli lives in a soap opera. One minute he’s injured, another minute he’s linked to leaving, he’s Mourinho’s worst enemy, then they’re best friends.

All he needs is a good performance and a run to help him with the pain. What better place to start than at the Etihad Stadium?

Given that Dele has only played 74 minutes in the league this season, Mourinho is unlikely to let him play in the first place.

But if he does, all eyes will be on whether the former England football golden boy can seize the opportunity with both hands.
