  • Bhavina Patel, an Indian para table tennis player, became the first Indian to win a medal at the Paralympic Games by reaching the women’s singles Category 4 final and winning a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
  • Bhavina has won numerous gold, silver and bronze medals for India in 28 international events including the World Championships.

  • Bhavina Patel belongs to Sundhiya near Vadnagar, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi grew up.
  • Bhavina grew up in Mehsana, Gujarat, where her family owned a small cutlery kiosk.
  • When Bhavina was one year old, she contracted polio, which affected her entire lower body. According to Bhavina, she contracted polio from another drug she was taking to treat the disease.

  • On August 26, 2021, Bavina knocked out Rio Paralympic gold medallist and world No. 5 Serbian Borislava Peric Rankovic in the women’s singles level 4 to enter 2020 2019 Tokyo Paralympic Semifinals; Bhavina defeated her Serbian rivals 11-5 11-6 11-7 in the quarterfinals lasting 18 minutes.
